In short
EU licence holders can drive in Spain indefinitely as non-residents. UK licence holders can drive as visitors for up to two years but must exchange to a Spanish licence if they become resident. US and Canadian licence holders need an international driving permit for stays beyond six months and must take a Spanish driving test if they become resident (no automatic exchange agreement).
EU Licence Holders: The Simplest Case
If you hold a driving licence issued by any EU or EEA member state — Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, France, or any other — you can drive in Spain on that licence indefinitely while you remain a non-resident.
EU licences are mutually recognised throughout the EU under EU Directive 2006/126/EC. There is no requirement to exchange, re-register, or notify any Spanish authority simply because you are using your EU licence in Spain as a visitor or non-resident property owner.
Key points:
- Your licence must be valid (not expired) in your home country
- If your home country requires periodic renewal (Germany renews licences every 15 years; UK licences expire at age 70), renew in your home country as normal
- If you lose your licence while in Spain, contact your home country's driving licence authority to arrange a replacement
- If you become a Spanish tax resident, the rules change — see below
Swiss licences in Spain
Switzerland is not an EU member but has a bilateral agreement with Spain. Swiss licence holders can drive in Spain as non-residents on their Swiss licence without restriction, and exchange is straightforward if they become resident.
UK Licence Holders: Post-Brexit Rules
After Brexit, UK driving licences are treated as third-country licences in Spain, not EU licences. The rules depend on your residency status:
As a visitor / non-resident (up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules): Your UK licence is valid in Spain for the duration of your visit. No additional documentation is required. UK licence holders who own property but spend less than 90 days per Schengen period in Spain can drive on their UK licence throughout their visit without any limitation.
As a long-stay visitor or if becoming resident: The UK and Spain have a bilateral driving licence recognition agreement (in place since 2021, updated post-Brexit). Under this agreement:
- UK licence holders who become Spanish residents can exchange their UK licence for a Spanish licence without taking a driving test — the exchange is administrative only
- The exchange must be completed within two years of registering as resident in Spain
- After two years of Spanish residency, driving on a UK licence without exchanging it is not permitted
There is no requirement for UK non-residents visiting Spain to exchange their licence, regardless of how often they visit.
If you have both an EU licence and a UK licence (for example, dual nationals): use the EU licence to avoid any post-Brexit complications.
US and Canadian Licence Holders
The United States and Canada do not have bilateral driving licence recognition agreements with Spain. This has important implications:
As a tourist / short-term visitor (up to 6 months): A valid US or Canadian driving licence is accepted in Spain for up to six months. However, it is strongly recommended — and legally advisable — to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home licence. An IDP is a multilingual translation of your licence and makes identification straightforward for Spanish police and car hire companies.
IDPs are issued:
- In the USA by the AAA (American Automobile Association) or AATA — cost approximately $20; valid for one year
- In Canada by your provincial automobile association (CAA or provincial equivalent)
As a Spanish resident: If a US or Canadian national becomes a Spanish tax resident, they cannot simply exchange their driving licence. They must apply to the DGT to have their foreign licence recognised and then sit the Spanish driving test (theory and practical) to obtain a Spanish licence. There is no administrative exchange route for US/Canadian nationals.
This is a meaningful consideration for those planning to spend more than 183 days per year in Spain.
When You Need to Exchange: Becoming a Spanish Resident
For non-EU nationals (UK, US, Canadian, Australian, etc.) who become Spanish tax residents:
- Register as a Spanish resident (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la UE for EU nationals; TIE — Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero for non-EU nationals)
- Contact the DGT to initiate the licence exchange process
- Submit application to the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico with: existing licence, valid passport, TIE/NIE, proof of residency, medical certificate (informe médico), and passport photos
- For UK nationals: administrative exchange — no test required, if completed within 2 years of becoming resident
- For US/Canadian nationals: study for and pass the Spanish theory test (examen teórico) and then the practical driving test
The Spanish theory test is taken at an authorised testing centre. Preparation material and practice tests in English are available through the DGT's official study materials and commercial apps like Autoescuela DGT.
Car hire as a non-resident
International car hire companies in Mallorca (Hertz, Europcar, Avis, etc.) accept EU, UK, US, and Canadian licences for hire purposes. For US and Canadian licence holders, the IDP alongside the national licence is the standard requirement for rental companies, even for short holidays.
