In short
Modelo 030 is a simple census registration form you submit to Hacienda. It activates your NIE as a NIF (tax identification number) and registers your address. Without it, you cannot file taxes online in Spain. It is free, takes about 20 minutes, and can be done in person at any Hacienda office or via a gestoría.
What is Modelo 030?
Modelo 030 is Spain's "Declaración Censal" — a census declaration that registers you with Hacienda (Spain's tax authority). It has nothing to do with paying tax. It simply tells Hacienda you exist as a taxpayer and activates your NIE as a functional tax identification number.
Without a completed Modelo 030, your NIE is essentially a green piece of paper. Hacienda doesn't know about you. You cannot file Modelo 210 online, and a gestoría filing on your behalf may run into issues with the system.
Do I need to file Modelo 030?
You need Modelo 030 if:
- You have a NIE and plan to file Spanish taxes (including Modelo 210)
- You have a NIE and want to file online using the Agencia Tributaria portal
- A gestoría or bank has asked you to provide proof of your tax registration
Most non-resident property owners need to file Modelo 030 once — and then never again, unless your address changes.
What information does it ask for?
Modelo 030 requires:
- Your full name as it appears on your passport
- Your NIE number
- Your date and country of birth
- Your nationality
- Your address in Spain (the property you own)
- Your address in your country of residence
- Your tax identification number in your home country (e.g. German Steuer-ID, UK UTR or NI number)
How to file Modelo 030
Option 1: In person at a Hacienda office Print Modelo 030, fill it in, and bring it to any Agencia Tributaria office with your passport and NIE certificate. Staff will stamp and register it on the spot. No appointment usually needed.
Option 2: Via a gestoría Your gestoría can file it electronically on your behalf using their professional digital certificate. This is the easiest route.
Option 3: Online yourself If you already have an FNMT digital certificate, you can file Modelo 030 via the Agencia Tributaria website — but if you're reading this, you probably don't have one yet, and getting the digital certificate requires Modelo 030 to be filed first. Start with the in-person route.
Your gestoría probably handles this
If you use a gestoría for Modelo 210 filing, ask them to handle Modelo 030 at the same time. It typically costs nothing extra and saves you a trip to Hacienda.
After filing Modelo 030
Once Modelo 030 is registered, you can:
- Apply for an FNMT digital certificate (to file taxes online yourself)
- Be registered for Hacienda's Cl@ve PIN system
- Have your gestoría file Modelo 210 and other taxes on your behalf smoothly
Your NIE is now live in Hacienda's system.
